Oba Has Spoken: No Iyaloja in Benin, Only Iye-Eki

Oba Has Spoken: No Iyaloja in Benin, Only Iye-Eki

I feel the Oba of Benin was very clear and succinct on this matter. There is no position called “Iyaloja” in Benin Kingdom — our tradition recognizes only **Iye-Eki**, the revered mother of the market. This distinction is not just a title; it represents centuries of cultural heritage and authority.

Edo people must stand firm in preserving their customs and institutions. Any attempt to impose foreign titles or practices undermines the authority of the palace and disrespects our ancestors. We cannot allow external influences to distort our heritage.

Our culture is our identity. It must never be discolored or diluted.
